Before Hiring a Contractor
1) Research your project before contacting contractors
2) Get at least 3 quotations
3) Check on contractor with the CSLB and Better Business
Bureau
4) Compare bids, is one bid extremely low or out of line?
5) Get references, follow up by e-mail (if possible)
6) Ask about construction permits
Who files, pays
Who arranges for inspections (get in writing)
7) Get a copy of their home improvement contract
Does it meet the guidelines of the CSLB?

8) Get insurance information
liability, errors & ommissions, and Workmans Comp
get policy numbers and expiration dates
verify with carriers
9) Get listing of subcontactors (if used)
get insurance information for subs
(workmans compensation may not cover subs)
Working with the Contractor
1) Get a schedule of work, what,when, how, how long
2) Establish work hours
3) Establish means for follow up and changes
who, how, when (in writing if change order)
4) Determine area of home which will be accessed
Do a walk through with contractor
Verify set up: drop cloths, cover furniture, etc
5) Clear access areas for attic, crawlspace, breaker box
6) Ask when power or services will be off
7) Remove small breakable items from home, valuables
8) Keep children away from workers and work areas
9) Be sure to have an adult present at all times
10) When work is complete, do a final walk through
